Roadblock: I can stay committed to eating well if…“I can just get it out of my system” first. So, let me just finish that half gallon of ice cream, that leftover pizza, that pack of Oreos now and I will somehow (magically apparently) never want to do it again. BTW, this didn’t work for me with smoking either. As a result of my 13 years of failed attempts to quit, not only had I not quit, but I had gone from a pack a day to a two and a half a day smoker. It never really worked to take my foot off my neck about an addictive behavor in the hopes that allowing it would get it out of my system. Actually, it only makes me want it more.
Safe detour: Plan for some overeating or treats. Build them safely into your forever plan. By trial and error you can figure out what you can and can’t do this with as well as when, how, and under what conditions. Learning this is a foundation to a lifestyle you can live with, a lifestyle that keeps you at your target weight forever.
