Intellectual Basics – I’ll learn faster with a food diary. The surest way to get the information I need objectively is to keep a record of what goes into my mouth and and other details that might be relevant (like how long had it been since I ate last, who was around me and what were they eating, does the breakfast I eat make a difference later, was I tired, stressed bored, etc.). A diary is an intention to know and an intention to do something about it.
When I was forced to do this by the weight management company I worked for, I was truly incensed. Turns out there were a lot of things that seemed no longer “worth it” when I looked at them on paper a few times – see my blog entry Record Keeping – an Exercise in Understanding, Not Judgment. A diary ends up being my salvation – how else I can figure out strategies that can save me from myself, actions I could take to help myself? Without detailed information from which I can construct strategies, I am relying on intending “not to eat over it”. I don’t know about you, but that hasn’t held up that well for me.
Do you have a clear idea of what steps work for you to head yourself off at the pass?
