Hold is a decision too. One of my clients is a broker, and he uses the expression – “buy, sell or hold”. A decision to be passive is a decision. “No plan” is really a decision not to have a good plan.
Being passivemay be the most insidious behavior pattern of all. I get to pretend that I had nothing to do with it. I remember being on a road trip with a friend who brought an entire box of Wheat Thins. She had about four, and then I ate the entire rest of the box on the drive back from North Carolina. When, on the next road trip I, as politely as possible, asked her to only bring however much she wanted to eat in the car, it came out that I could have thrown those Wheat Thins out for all she cared. She had brought them for me. All I had to do was ask.
Holiday gift baskets are a prime example of this. Do I have to keep them? Would I open if it were something I actually didn’t like? Will they ever know?
I have this great comic in my office of a woman saying to a waiter, “I am going to order a broiled chicken breast and broccoli, but I want you to bring me Chicken Parmesan and pasta by mistake.“
