August 22

I am always amazed at how many people are out and about exercising really early in the morning in the summer.  Just when I think I am the only one who has to work so hard at it, I see lots of others asking the same thing of themselves.  It is a great time to get a running start (no pun intended) with anything you want to do outside because you have several months before you have to legitimately worry about the weather and darkness interfering.  I remember when I used to work at the HMR weight program at Pascack Valley Hospital (remember good old PVH?).  We had a whole crew of patients at one time who got together to walk at about 10 pm most nights during the Summer. There had to be at least 8-10 who made it a regular practice.

Walking in the dead of the heat of the day is bound to squelch even the most ardent enthusiasm for the beginning walker.  Dawn is a requirement at the Celery Farm if you want to avoid the mosquitoes and horse flies.  It is cool and moist and you get to watch all the flocks of birds leave for the day – quite dramatic.  Any later and it is a veritable swamp – barely breathable.  I had  a client hear me talk about it so much that she eventually made her way there…at 3 in the afternoon one muggy August day!  Never been back since, not surprisingly.  Not a good way to start your exercise journey.  Just like going to your first weight lifting class or appointment and killing yourself.  Guaranteed to make it your last workout too.

Regular exercisers can’t afford to have to expect every exercise experience to be an over the top exertionTheir key is just to keep it going.  Having half-hearted workouts but not blowing it off entirely is one of the ways to maintain that continuity.
