How I start my day can set the tone, especially on vacation where I am on the brink of “vacation mentality” all the time anyway. One great thing about cruises is that they post the menus in advance so you can be prepared by selecting what you think is truly special, and you have time to wrap your head around it before you get there.
Case in point: I have a client who was so in tune with her own vacation mentality and how it had cost her in the past that she gave her waiter a $100 tip (probably a week’s salary for this waiter) on day one of her Venezuela vacation and asked him to “take care of her” by presenting her food in ways that were effective for her – no bread basket, extra veggies, etc.
Another case in point: I have a client who has a beach house that he goes to virtually every weekend for long weekends all summer. That environment and all the patterns he has developed there have been probably his biggest Achilles’s heel for his weight management – not only what he actually does while he is there, but also how it undermines his commitment when he gets home. One of the things he changed this summer that has impacted his whole day is his morning routine. Instead of rising and, for supposedly for a bit of quiet time, heading over to the local Quick Check for coffee where he sees every conceivable form of individually portioned junk food that the planet can provide, he was able to acknowledge to himself how much this undermines his whole day. This year he instead purchased a Grind and Brew so that he can make even better coffee at home and take it down onto the dock for a bit of genuine quiet time there each morning.
