What is the hardest part of the day for you on vacation?  Cocktail hour, late nights, group meals, family style eating, no real meal at lunch, stopping for ice cream in the afternoons, candy stores, the flight itself?   Midwest Express used to give out hot chocolate chip cookies – I would be derailed before I even landed, and I don’t even love chocolate chip cookies.  For me it is sitting at the table long after the meal is done.  If I don’t actually remove my plate (or all the remaining food), I will likely continue to eat as long as there is anything to be eaten whether it is on your plate or mine.

If I can figure out strategies for the hardest part of the day, perhaps much of the rest of the day will follow suit.  At least that way I can also capitalize on the part of the day that is not that hard for me – and not add that to the overeating I really can’t seem to avoid.

Case in point:  A client of mine had the biggest problem with the snack foods they kept in their condo when they went to Lake Placid each year skiing.  Her solution was to stop everyday at a 7-Eleven on the way home from the mountain and let the kids go in on their own and purchase one thing each for their snack.  This way they never had any open bags of crap in the room.  And this way too they could get exactly what they were in the mood for each day and she wouldn’t need to keep every conceivable option on hand.

I don’t think I have ever personally purchased a bag of Cheese Doodles, but I can think of at least two recent occasions right off the top of my head when I polished off almost an entire large bag of Cheese Doodles singlehandedly that someone else brought.  I can think of a couple of instances as I write this where I did the same thing with those giant bags of Twizzlers.  I don’t even really like Twizzlers.  Unfortunately that doesn’t seem to matter once I get started…especially on vacation.
