A calorie is not just a calorie to me…when eating this food does not displace any other food.  Seems like bread, especially at restaurants, is always in addition to the other food, not in place of it.  One of my clients calls these foods (like the free bruschetta, or those crispy parmesan toasted flatbreads that go down oh so easily) “accessories”.  Bread products of any kind, including cold cereals and the whole family of puffed products, literally dissolve in my saliva and are taking up virtually no space in my stomach – not to mention they are the first foods to be processed and the first to leave my stomach.  At least when I eat veggies, they take up space and cost so little calorically that they can practically be considered free space-taker-uppers.

A really useful piece of information for long term weight management is to know how many cups of veggies make me full enough so that I do not want to overeat the foods that I find more tempting.  For me that is usually about three cups. Plus, as an added bonus, when I am eating something that I typically have difficulty controlling, but am eating it on a fairly full stomach, I stop because I am really actually full.  I really don’t want more.  That is a far different mentality than “I really want five more pieces, but I am not allowed”.
