A calorie is not just a calorie to me when…it is having the opposite effect from what I was intending. The high fructose corn syrup found especially in soft drinks (like sports drinks) actually interferes with the function of the insulin receptors, making us more susceptible to diabetes. HFCS administration is one method used to create insulin resistance and hypertension in laboratory animals so we can test drugs on them. Elevated insulin levels downregulate the production of growth hormone and testosterone (“when insulin is out to play, growth hormone and testosterone go away” to quote one nutritional biochemist). Elevated insulin also promotes fat storage. Seems a little self defeating, don’t you think, to drink a sports drink containing HFCS that both interferes with the growth hormone and testosterone you would want to be producing, and at the same time decreases post exercise fat burning?
Did you know that the average child in Ameica today (even the thin ones) has at least three risk factors for heart disease by the time they are twelve, and it’s getting worse each year? I have had psychiatrists referring kids because of behavior problems (no proteins or Omega 3’s in their diets to make neurotrnasmitters perhaps?) and pediatritians sending kids that aren’t growing in height (lack of adequate protein perhaps?).
