Paying as I go encourages being discriminating. If I am doing the work to balance the budget right along, I can feel the consequences of my indulgence sooner, and make adjustments in what I think is worth the work. Dieting in January is so far after the fact, that I often don’t connect the dots of being the one to bring the fabulous dessert or taking home problematic leftovers with the extra seven pounds I am sporting by season’s end. And deciding that something is not worth it to me is an entirely different feeling than looking at it like I am not allowed.
