Some of my clients who love to cook have learned to maintain their food gift traditions by making safe, non-tempting things like chutney or flavored vinegars in special bottles. Pier One has great decorative bottles for just such things.
Case in point: Eleanor had been enormously successful all summer and well into the school year while on break from her teaching job – down over 40 lbs. and counting. When the Christmas rolled around though, she was reluctant to disappoint everyone, so she made her traditional gifts of her special trail mix complete with M&M’s. She had such a following, that she used to make it in a garbage pail! Good intentions, no doubt. Unfortunately, gift distribution too opened some dangerous doors – specifically the door to the dread “Teacher’s Room”. Need I say more? You fill in the rest of that year’s story. She did learn from experience though and by the next year established a new stellar reputation for flavored vinegars with herbs in beautiful bottles – no problem with that temptation.
