On the other hand, you can always use the opportunity to bring things that you really love to have, but cannot keep in your own house. I used to get this fabulous Key Lime chiffon pie from the Wyckoff bakery. It was just spectacular, but would have been a disaster for me to buy for my house. Also, it helped that I didn’t bake it so I wasn’t quite so invested in it. If I were really playing my cards right, I would ask someone else to pick it up for me and avoid the bakery stimulus too.
If there is some specialty treat that you love and that just spells the holiday for you, like struffoli, try making it for someone else’s party. If other family members can’t bear to give it all away, perhaps they can let you know how much they really think they want for themselves and keep exactly that much. You can even label them as such if it helps. I remember one client that always claimed that she had to keep the leftovers for her husband. One day she had a big “Aha”. If she always ate them, then they clearly weren’t her husband’s leftovers.
