Family traditions are whatever you decide to make them and practice them to be. If you are a new family, it is especially important to create traditions that you will be happy to have in your repertoire of traditions down the line. Somewhere I read that you are not only creating the eating habits of your children, but of your grandchildren as well. Makes sense.
One client had created an interesting well-loved family tradition for Christmas Eve of a chilled pumpkin soup that she served from a punch bowl complete with punch glasses. She would put a dollop of sour cream and a dash of paprika in each cup. Another does a great healthy Christmas Eve of the seven fishes. There are plenty of ways to make things special without it always being something you have to spend the next week starving or exercising back off.
