What I have figured out works for me (and this may be the exact opposite of what works for you – that is exactly the point) is a limited, decision-less plan.  I typically both decide and stage lunch and dinner in advance most days during the week.  However, my plan is what I have decided (through experience) to make/buy for the week.  It’s based on my own guidelines, and currently hunter-gatherer (protein, produce and healthy fats) guidelines work best for me.  It is not “my favorite stuff” because my favorite stuff simply doesn’t work for me to manage my calories.  I can’t reliably contain it.

For me it’s just easier to approach my weekday meals with a sort of “utilitarian” mindset, like “school nights”.  I don’t ask myself what I am “in the mood for” because it is safer for me to create a plan where that is not relevant.  Left to my own devices, seems I am always in the mood for a treat.

Typically, I choose to eat protein with a lot of volume of produce with some kind of delicious fat in or on it.  (Don’t you love that we finally vindicated healthy fats and now you can slather them on your veggies?)  I pick my battles and fighting my mood or trying to eat small portions are not among them.  I “treat myself” on the weekends, typically outside my home.
