I have to be able to incorporate into my budget and plan what really happens in my life – for example, what happens when I have guests for the weekend. I ask myself questions like, “What am I planing to do for cocktail hour this time? What happened last time these friends came? Weren’t these the friends who arrived with a dozen bagels, or Italian pastries from Brooklyn or whatever? How do I want to plan for that this time?”
If I am honest with myself about my history, I can see that train coming in advance, and “budget” accordingly. Calorie knowledge can save me from the “I’m off my diet” mentality, the “this won’t count because it is a special circumstance” mentality. Everything counts. It counts behaviorally, nutritionally and calorically. Of course, if I just wouldn’t eat any junk, I probably wouldn’t even have to think numbers or calories, but I don’t know many people who are really willing to do that, especially under these kinds of circumstances. But having some indulgences doesn’t need to be at the expense of managing my weight. I am never stuck wearing my food. I am stuck paying for it.
