Since so far I am not having a lot of luck conjuring up willpower when I need it, it just makes sense to focus on at least one thing that I can do something about – my environment. I think of managing the environment as just stacking the deck in my favor. Don’t get me wrong – I would like for my head to stay in the right place all the time too so that I could just put all this food stimulus under my nose and not respond to it. But so far that isn’t working.
In 40 years of managing with my own relationship with food and 20 years of helping others do the same, I have come to the conclusion that environmental control is the single greatest tool in anyone’s arsenal. We used to say it was exercise (and that is still a huge motivator), but even most of our regular exercises are overweight now too.
