Food people are about food…food people volunteer for food related activities. I know that I really have to watch that tendency – being the one to run the Cookie Exchange, manning the bake sale, interacting with the caterer, picking up the cake, cleaning up the food. Frequently there is something else I could do to help – decorations, picking up relatives, flowers, putting chairs away. Notice the “guy” jobs. They rarely seem to feel a need to be the food handler and likely their tasks are physical, so not only am I not eating, but I am exercising also. My sister (the non food person) volunteers for things like the banner committee at her church. I didn’t have to work in Creme de la Creme for more that an hour to get clear on the fact that I wanted to work in a gourmet store, not because I enjoyed creating displays of interesting jams and mustards, but because I just liked to be near food.
Case in point: How cool is this? As I am writing this I got an email from a current client who is a teacher. She writes, “Also, as you know I am on Sunshine (party planning) at school. After the Thanksgiving Feast I changed my job—I used to be set-up and clean-up. That is just way too hard–too much food around. Now I am the treasurer of Sunshine. I just write the checks–I can’t eat paper!!!”
I’d lay money on her long term weight management success.
