December 11
We train people’s expectations…people bring you/prepare for you what they think you want. Ifsomeone on my job is tracking me down to bring me a piece of the birthday cake I so deliberately avoided, then they must think I want them to (well that, or they are assuaging their own guilt by feeding me!). If my friends bake me blueberry muffins for breakfast when I am staying with them, then I have somehow led them to believe that that is what I want. No one invites their vegetarian friend over for dinner and serves steak.
Case in point: One of my clients had taken on the responsibility of being the cake baker for everyone’s birthday at her job – really a slippery slope for her. She reluctantly came to the conclusion that she couldn’t really be “about cake” and successfully manage her own weight, but she loved the role of party-maker. Her solution to date is to provide Edible Arrangements for the office and a single store bought cupcake with a candle for the birthday boy/girl. It’s working better for everyone.
