Is there someone whose support you need to enlist, someone with whom your success is tied up?  Typically at the very least, it is helpful to have those you live with in on it with you so that the environment you share can be supportive of your goals.  But your spheres of influence may be broader than that, including kids, extended family, the people you eat lunch with at work, the friends you regularly eat with.

Case in point:  One of my clients had just lost about 40 more lbs. (after getting stuck for several months about halfway to her goal) when she made lunch plans with a historic eating buddy.  Embarassed to tell her friend up front that she was once again seriously attempting to get a hold of her weight and eating behaviors (fair enough given her history, right?), she was totally derailed when that friend predictably selected their favorite “down home” restaurant for lunch. The next time a similar situation arose, she preempted the decision by asking her friend to join her at a pre-selected safe restaurant.
