A truly valuable and edifying exercise is to make a list of what I say to myself and what the truth actually is. I take a piece of lined paper and make two columns, labeling one list “What I Tell Myself” and the other “What the Truth Is” (or perhaps, “The Rest of the Story”). Out of the context of the situation (because my desire to delude myself always causes me to come up with plausible lies at the time), I list all the ways I can think of where I tell myself half truths, and then insist on writing down what the rest of the story is. For example: What I tell Myself: I don’t have time for breakfast. What the truth is: I could get up earlier. I could go to bed earlier so it is easier to get up earlier. I could make breakfast the night before and eat it while I get ready or in the car. I could stash my breakfast foods at the office. I could do any number of things to solve this once I am no longer just buying into my out.
