The beauty of rationalizations is that they are always partially true.  But they are only “part” of the story – the part I want to hear and buy into.  They are never the whole story.  It’s that grain of truth that I can by into.  The problem is that I stop there and don’t tell myself the rest of the story.

Case in point:  One of my clients attends a conference in DC every year that is located right next to a gourmet jelly bean store.  One year she purchased a pound of jelly beans for her son, an apparent jelly bean afficionado, rationalizing to herself that she just had to buy these for him.  After all, it is an internationally famous store (who knew jelly beans even had international fame?) and he might never have the opportunity to have them if she didn’t bring some home to him.  They are especially expensive as jelly beans go, so she was fairly certain he would never purchase them for himself.  Isn’t it a Mom’s job to give her children some of the treats that they would not afford themselves?  He works hard.  He deserves this.  All sounds perfectly reasonable, doesn’t it?

All true, but not the whole story.  Here’s the part she didn’t mention to herself during this deliberately brief conversation.  He doesn’ t live with her.  He doesn’t know she is in DC.  He doesn’t even know about this store or its famous beans.  She won’t be seeing him for another month after she is home.  He has a problem with his weight also, so she probably isn’t doing him any favor by adding all these new jelly bean flavors this to his repertoire of things he is already trying not to eat.  And here’s the kicker:  why do I know this story in such detail?  Where do you think these jelly beans actually ended up?
