Because they may not cave on the first exposure, many people are unaware that each exposure is contributing to a sort of critical mass of longing.  I don’t think most people are really aware of how much stimulus they are subjected to in any typical day. When they buckle under the pressure of their own mounting desire, they may never put it together that the process started with the muffins on their own counter that they gave themselves gold stars for walking right by that morning.  Instead, they just berate themselves for their lack of willpower, never realizing that it has potentially been eroded by food stimulus in their environment from the moment they arose.

Did you ever hear the “Black Dog, White Dog story”?  I know I’ll probably butcher this, but it goes something like this:  one man is telling another man that he has a black dog and a white dog at war within himself all the time.  When asked, “Which dog usually wins?,” he replies, “The one I feed the most.”  Is your environment making it easier or harder for you?  Who is getting the most stimulus, your on-track self or your off-track self?
