October 2
I once heard it said that no one does anything that they really think is wrong. Instead, they convince themselves that it is “OK under the circumstances”. Apparently that even includes murderers. If you asked them, they would give you what they consider to be a perfectly plausible explanation for their actions. This is especially true for me when it is something that I have agonized over, like managing my weight. I go to great lengths to justify my choices. I mean, it is not as if I haven’t given this a lot of thought and emotional investment over the years. If I am doing something that is really not smart, believe me, I have had to find a way to override all the evidence to the contrary and convince myself that it was OK.
This is one of my biggest challenges when working with my weight….”justification”. I can justify why I had to have it (whatever I am indulging in) and why I deserve it. Then afterwards I deal with the guilt and remorse.
