A calorie is not just a calorie to me when…I am unwilling to part with the leftovers.  If I need to get rid of something after it has been served, I usually need to arrange for that in advance since the longer I own it, the less willing I am to part with it.  I always know if my clients are up to something when they dodge this little detail.  “Oh, it will probably all get eaten anyway”, they say.  “Yes, but just suppose it doesn’t”, I annoyingly always persist.  That’s a downside of seeing a nutritionist who has their own issues with food:  they are on to you.

Here’s what I know about myself:  if I don’t arrange for the fate of the suspect leftovers in advance, then I am not really planning on parting with them.  It reminds me of when I was theoretically quitting smoking.  If I didn’t tell my smoking friends in advance that I was quitting, then I was deliberately leaving the door open to bum from them.  Several of my clients have deals with their supportive spouses to take responsibility for chucking the leftover desserts…when they aren’t looking.

    This is me. I save things under the premise that it’s wasteful to toss it out but knowing full well it will probably be me that goes back and eats it. It’s a planned failure. What a bad habit.
