August 10

Starting the day reasonably is especially smart in the summer, since you never know what ‘s coming.  Case in point:  A lazy Summer Sunday and (let’s call her) Amanda decides go out to brunch with the family, consuming most of her days allotment of calories on a “lite” breakfast of sausage and eggs with the usual free accoutrements of potatoes and buttered toast (about 1200).

You know what happens next, right?   Later that day, neighbors start grilling and end up inviting them all over for a spontaneous BBQ followed by ice cream.  Probably would have been easier in hindsight to pass on the brunch, or choose lighter options (like melon stuffed with cottage cheese or an egg substitute veggie omelet with grilled tomatoes or fruit on the side) with the awareness that Summer regularly presents unexpected eating opportunities later in the day, than it is to now stay within her maintenance calorie budget.

And, I don’t know about you, but I can also really easily get caught in the “I already blew it” mentality with choices I make early in the day, and use it as an excuse to go crazy later.
