Continuing to subject myself to stimulus that I then have to say no to, be it on my kitchen counter or in my office coffee room, is sort of like allowing a kettle to let off steam and lose internal pressure. Each time I have to say no, I lose a little of that umph. I am a little less bullet proof.
I think I can fairly say that 90% of the time, when a client tells me that they are losing their psych, we can trace it back to somehow allowing more food stimulus. If we look back, we can always trace the path from where it first began, often innocently enough, to where it ended up. The crash and burn is always at the end of a long line of escalating stimulus – usually that they were unaware of at the time, but can often clearly see in hindsight.
