If I chose to, I can teach myself to argue rationally back.  If I listen to my self talk, then I can see how I promise, excuse and rationalize myself right out of the things I need to do.  Although this usually takes place out of context later, eventually I taught myself to listen to myself while I am actually doing the rationalizing when I can do something about it.

We have likely all experienced this game and have sometimes even succeeded in talking ourselves into dong “the right thing”.  We just don’t realize it because the conversation is now automatic – yay!.  Like going to work when I really don’t feel like it.  Or even like not buying a donut when I buy my coffee.  That new “special, time-limited, seasonal” donut that I have never tried at Dunkin Donuts catches my attention (as it is intended to), and in that split second my history with donuts flashes before my eyes and I manage not to buy it.  Once I have done that deliberately a few times, these conversations can become so automatic I don’t even notice them.  Listen to yours some time.

Case in Point:  Rationalization:  I think I will skip the gym today.   I can always go tomorrow.  The truth:  if I don’t go today it, I am even less likely to go tomorrow.  If I go today, it will be just a tiny bit easier tomorrow.
