Intellectual Basics – I have to figure out what it takes – specifically – to achieve my goals.  I can know the calories to be my target weight (actually measurable with a Body Gem – a device that measures metabolic rate through a measure of oxygen in and carbon dioxide out) so that I can program my life to “be her” instead of temporarily dieting.

I can figure out what kind of exercise makes sense for me.  Clients are always asking me what the best exercise is.  While I can give them very scientifically based answers that address metabolism, fat burning post exercise, hormonal response to type of exercise, etc., etc., etc., I always answer, “The one you can actually get yourself to do”.

I can figure out what type of eating plan works best for me – and more importantly, why it worked for me.  Past experience with diet programs has likely shown this to you too if think about it.

Cases in point:  Alice liked Jenny Craig primarily because it was portion controlled and packaged and she could eat the things that she really can’t manage to portion limit in her real life.   When choosing these same foods outside her home, she learned to split those choices with her husband to create the same Jenny Craig size portions.  Melinda, on the other hand, found she couldn’t portion those types of foods when they didn’t come like that in a box! Rachel liked a modified Atkins style (or Weight Watcher Core Program) primarily because it was simple and limited (and of course, she is not hungry when she follows that  Paleo-style plan).  Marty liked Weight Watchers points because he likes to make his own rules and hates to be told that he can’t have something.  Sandy liked Diet Center because it “gave” her so much food (lots of veggies at each meal instead of starchy carbs).  Esther loved Zone delivered meals because they were prepackaged, balanced to avoid cravings, and too expensive to throw out!
